Kubb tournament playing fields are precisely in line, thanks to Leica iCON robot 60

Kubb1This past spring, the Leica iCON robot 60 solution was used for the systematic planning of Kubb playing fields.

Kubb is a traditional Swedish game played outdoors. It is lawn game that is best described as a combination of horseshoes and bowling. Since the first commercial Kubb set came out on the market in the 1980s, the sport has been growing in popularity and now large Kubb tournaments take place throughout Europe and the States.

Kubb2

Kubb requires the playing field to have the exact measurements of 5 metres in width by 8 metres in length. The object is to knock over wooden blocks, known as Kubbs, by throwing wooden batons at them. This game requires not only skills but strategic planning as well.

A tournament is also organised by the MagnetWerk Club from Herisau Switzerland. Each year, the tournament’s participants and audience increases. On May 21, there were a total of 46 teams playing on 18 fields under brilliant sunshine.

Kubb3According to strict Kubb Tournament regulations, the organizing committee was assigned to prepare 18 perfectly consistent fields. To ensure this was the case, a Leica iCON robot 60 was brought in to measure the playing fields. The iCON robot 60 enabled committee to stake out all 18 playing fields simply and accurately  in a very short period of time. With only a short introduction of how the total station works, the committee was easily able to enter the corner points of the fields into the system.

This is just another small example of how highly precise instruments from Leica Geosystems can also be used in leisure activities. We would like to give a big thanks to Christoph Lux and Jan Zimmermann from the Leica iCON Team for providing us with iCON products and a short 20 minutes training session.
