Changing cities demand better utility mapping

Life changes lead us to change our cities too. Infrastructural city changes start mainly from changes in utilities. We are not aware of these utility changes because they are not visible.

Building a new house on the street, changing telecom cables to fiber optics or putting power lines from air to underground means change in infrastructure. Like any other structure, the change in utilities must be also planned. Planning utilities is even more complicated than other structure because we simply cannot see them. Despite the standards and rules our utility maps are still not reliable. Often utility maps have the general location of a power line but not the exact location of the cable. Damaging a cable or gas line can be hazardous and cause big costs.

Similar to topological surveying, we also want to have highly accurate utility surveying. Utility surveying means detection of the utility and mapping the utility. The traditional way of utility mapping is by using electro Magnetic Locators (EML) or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Detected utilities are marked on the road surface with spray paints and a surveyor collects the points that were marked with GNSS or TPS.

Mapping utilities in this way requires high experience. Interpretation of the location and direction of utilities on field is very difficult. Also, collecting the points later on requires visiting the site again. If detection and collection are not done by the same crew, often the marks on the site can be confusing.
